Chapter 11
Maverick
Just get it over with.
Iâve been staring at my phone for nearly ten minutes. Itâs late, but even with the time difference between Indiana and Seattle, Noah should still be awake.
Before I can chicken out, I dial my brotherâs number and wait. The phone rings and rings. I tense up on the couch, my fingers curling into claws around the cool metal. Iâm home alone. August has an away game and wonât be back until later. Iâd rather him not be here for this conversation anyway.
âHello?â
I swallow. Gather my courage. âHey, Noah.â Fuck, my voice sounds funny. âWhatâs up?â
Itâs quiet on his end. He replies with, âThe sky.â
I snort and ease back into the couch cushions. My heart is racing, and I feel feverish. No reason to be afraid. This is my brother, the one Iâm closest to. The only person aside from my therapist who Iâve spoken to in length about Kaylieâs death. I know Noah would never judge me. âClever.â
âYou sound weird,â he says. âIs everything okay?â
âFine, fine,â I say around the lump in my throat. âI canât call and see how youâre doing? Howâs Max?â A distraction is just what I need.
âHm.â A skeptical sound, but he lets it go. âMax is good. Just got a promotion.â
âAnd?â It takes a while for Noah to warm up.
I can sense him thinking. âWeâre thinking about planning a trip next year. Maybe Canada to do some hiking.â Nerves flutter in his voice.
I burst out laughing. âYou? Hiking? Please.â Noah feels safest in enclosed spaces, preferably with his computer or a video game in hand. He doesnât like getting dirty either. The thought of him sitting around a campfire is comical. âDid Max rope you into it?â
Noah chuckles as well, knowing Iâm right. It sounds a tad maniacal. âHe promised if he gets to choose this vacation, Iâll get to choose the next vacation.â
âWhich will be where?â
âAt our house.â
âStaycation. Nice.â Needing to move around, I wander over to the bookshelf and scour the line of titles. Most of the books are Augustâs. A lot of nonfiction, but I catch a book of short stories, too. Thatâs one thing we havenât discussedâliterature. I file that information away for our next breakfast session. âYou coming home for the holidays?â
âNot Thanksgivingâweâre heading to Maxâs parentsâ placeâbut for Christmas, yeah.â
Iâm glad. Itâs been lonely with Noah gone. Kellan and I get along, but weâre cut from two different cloths.
Noah says, âA worthy attempt at distracting me from the reason youâre calling, but itâs not going to work. Spill.â
My groan slips out before I can call it back. âThe curse of a brother who actually pays attention.â
âYou say youâd rather have this conversation with Sebastian?â
âHell no.â I love Sebastian but.. no. Just no. Heâs always trying to bring the spotlight back to him, and right now, I need this to be about me. âI wanted to ask youââ I stop. Ugh. It doesnât fucking matter. All of my brothers are in relationships with men. Itâs still a scary thing to ask though.
